Hiking,
and Other Adventures “My father
considered a walk among the mountains as the equivalent of church-going” (Aldous
Huxley) “Not all who wander are lost” (Tolkien) Hiking: The National Forests and National Park near
Harrisonburg offer the range of hiking experiences, from casual walking near
streams, to strenuous exploration across mountains and off-trail. We can go for a half day or a full day, and
destinations might be a fire tower, a waterfall, a swimming hole, a rock
maze, or a mountain peak. These are
not the colossal and dramatic natural features like Half Dome in Yosemite or
the Grand Canyon in Colorado. Rather,
look for delightful hidden places, quiet beauty, and rarely a crowd or
tourist. Instruction topics can
include stream crossing, map and compass/navigation and orienteering skills,
or fire-building. (Full Day: $125 1-3 P; then $20 each
additional. Half Day: $95 1-3 P; then
$20 each additional) Design Your Own Adventure:
Numerous other options exist, including hiking and climbing guiding
along Virginia’s Blue Ridge or at the Nelson
Rock Outdoor Center (WV), a climbing self-rescue clinic, outdoor fitness
training, group orienteering challenges in the National Forest, and flatwater
paddling instruction for beginners and children. We can customize to meet the interests of
your family, scout troop, or youth group.

walking has] nothing in it akin to taking exercise, as the sick take medicine
at stated hours, as the swinging of dumbbells or chairs . . . but is itself
the enterprise and adventure of the day.” (H.D. Thoreau) |
